Almost the whole southern coast of Chile is protected in either National Parks or Reserves. In an area roughly 100 km wide from the high ice fields of the southern Andes to the ragged western edge of the archipelago and perhaps 1000 km south to north, there is only one small fishing village, some transient fishing boats… and for a while, me. The Chilean Navy took me in and dropped me and my gear on the south east side of the central island shown here. After exploring other options, I decided to stay and build a shelter where they left me.
