Dismantling the Cabin
The national park official asked me to leave the cabin in place, but I decided to tear it down. I knew the sun and wind would rot and scatter the tarp and create a mess. I also wanted to lighten my footprint as much as possible and to give the island back to itself: to the sea and sky and the creatures that live there. I had come as a guest and had tried to be a good neighbor. I didn't want to increase the human hegemony by leaving an outpost behind. I also didn't want to make it easier for someone else who might wish to experience the wild wonder I had experienced. (photo: Patti Kuchinsky)
